 READING

2 Read about this great journey. How do you think a person should prepare for such a journey? Discuss in pairs.

A person can prepare for such a journey by taking someone with them to help in case of emergency, keeping a first-aid kit on board, checking the weather forecast to see if it is suitable for such a journey, choosing a place where there are few or no dangerous sea creatures, taking a lot of water and food, etc.

The longest swim

On 7th April 2007 CE, the swimmer Martin Strel completed an incredible journey. He swam the entire length of the Amazon River! This was the longest swimming journey ever.

Martin set off from Peru on 1st February and arrived in Brazil sixty-six days later. The Amazon River in South America is a very dangerous place. It is home to the bull shark, which is the most dangerous shark to humans. He said that his best protection from predators was a group of pink dolphins. These friendly creatures accompanied him every day, swimming alongside him. Martin kept up a strict routine during the Amazon swim. He stopped for a short break each day for lunch. Every day he swam around eighty-four kilometres.

Before he completed this amazing journey, Martin had already broken other records. He swam across the English Channel in 1997 CE, and then became the first man to swim across the Mediterranean, from Tunisia to Italy, in the same year. Then, between 2000 CE and 2004 CE, he swam the River Danube in Europe, the Mississippi in the USA, the Paran in Argentina and the Yangtze in China. He also broke the record for the longest continuous swim as he swam around 504 kilometres non-stop down the Danube.

LISTENING

7 Listen to a description of a tour to Wadi Rum in Jordan. Which ways of travelling are mentioned?

Audioscript

Wadi Rum is a valley in the south of Jordan with spectacular desert landscape and prehistoric archaeological sites. The towering cliff, high sand dunes and bold rock formations are awe-inspiring. Travellors can explore the area by taking a jeep tour, but a more unusual way to travel through it is riding on the back of a camel.

Riding on a camel through the red deserts of Wadi Rum is a unique experience. Since ancient times, camels have always been among the most useful transport tools in Jordanian history. They can store enormous quantities of water.

Visitors to the valley can go on a three- day camel safari trip that includes camping overnight in tents. They can see unforgettable views at sunrise or sunset. They can observe the unique plant and animal wildlife of the area. During the trip, there are visits to sites such as the Anfashieh inscriptions- a mountain with carving of a camel caravan from the Nabatean and Thaumadic period. There are more Nabatean rock carvings of people and animals in the narrow canyon of Jebel Khaz’ali.
