The answer: a. Global worming             b. atmosphere           c. Earth         d. flood          e. accelerate          f. carbon deoxide       g. drought         h. storm       i. melt        j. freeze

Before we start

*Do you know the reasons of the global warming and What's the way affecting the weather and the living conditions in Jordan and the region?

Suggested answers

Droughts are so frequent because of global warming; the Earth’s temperature goes up every year; the Earth’s atmosphere warms up. Global warming means that the Earth’s atmosphere warms up.

SB page 17 / exercise 1

1 Listen to a specialist talking about global warming and write down notes.

Audioscript

Global warming means that the atmosphere warms up. This changes the climate of the Earth. When the atmosphere warms up, the weather becomes more violent. This makes storms very strong. Periods of drought become long in some places. In other places, it rains so much that there are floods. The ice in the North and South poles melts and sea levels rise. The future of our planet is in danger.

2 Listen to the words below in context. Try to guess their meanings.

1 Global warming means that the atmosphere warms up.

2 The temperature goes up every year.

3 Our planet Earth is in danger.

4 Global warming changes our climate.

5 Droughts are dry periods when it doesn’t rain.

6 When it rains a lot, there are floods.

7 There is too much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

8 When the weather is violent, storms become very strong.

9 Pollution accelerates global warming. We have to slow it down.

10 The sun heats up the air and warms up the Earth.

11 The ice in the Poles melts because of global warming.

12 We need carbon dioxide in order not to freeze.

Sb page 17 / exercise 4

In a group, discuss the consequences of global warming. Make a list of climate changes in Jordan or in the region (changes in the seasons, temperatures, rain and floods, wind, droughts, etc.)

Answers may include

 • higher temperatures

• season shift (the change affecting a season’s beginning and duration)

• plants and animals dying out

• droughts

The main ideas:

*The causes of the global warming.

*How does the global warming creat.

*Suggestion to slow down of the global warming by some steps.

************************************************

1.What does the global warming mean?

Consisting carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and the Earth’s temperature goes up.

2.What things that depend on the Earth's climate?

The oceans, the atmosphere, the hot and the cold parts of the planet, deserts and rainforests.

We are still in time to save the Earth!

What can we do to slow down global warming?

The oceans, the atmosphere, the hot and the cold parts of the planet, deserts and rainforests depend on the Earth’s climate. But our climate is a complex system that depends on the sun. Man’s machines, cars, planes, trains and computers emit carbon dioxide which doesn't allow the heat from the sun to leave. When there is too much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, the Earth’s temperature goes up. This is called “global warming.” We must slow down global warming. Here are some simple things we can do:

a. Walk or take the bus to school.

b. Reuse and recycle paper, glass, plastic and aluminium.

c. Turn off the water while you brush your teeth.

d. Turn off the lights, the heating, the air conditioning, the TV or computers when you don’t use them. Don’t play video games all the time: they use a lot of energy!

e. Plant trees or start a vegetable garden.

f. Wear cool clothes in summer and turn down the air conditioning. In winter, wear warm clothes and turn down the heating.

*Before we start

You have to ask yourself many questions about the glabal warming

*What do you think about global warming; whether you think it is real or not; what effects it is having on the world and on Jordan.

*Does global warming have a direct effect on your own lives? (Desertification and shortages of water are the most serious effects of global warming.)

*Have you  heard about the World Summits and the agreements that different countries have or have not signed in relation to it.

Suggested answers

When there’s too much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, the Earth’s temperature goes up. This is called global warming.

Consequences: As the atmosphere warms up, the weather becomes more violent.

Causes: Man’s machines, cars, planes, trains and computers produce carbon dioxide. When there’s too much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, the Earth’s temperature goes up.

SB page 18 / exercise 1:

1 Answer these questions following the Reading Strategies. Then read the article above and check your answers.

a. How is man responsible for global warming?

b. Why shouldn't we use computers or play video games all the time?

c. In your opinion, what will happen if we don't try to slow down global warming?

The answer:

. When man’s machines (cars, planes, trains, etc.) produce too much carbon dioxide, there will be an increase in Earth’s temperature, eventually causing global warming.

b. We shouldn’t use computers or play video games all the time because they use a lot of energy.

c. Students’ own answers
