Core or Extended Curriculum in IGCSE subjects?

Core or Extended Curriculum in IGCSE subjects?

Core or Extended Curriculum in IGCSE subjects?

In some IGCSE subjects, there is a choice between Core and Extended papers. Jo Academy International Programs has put together a brief answer for the inquiry related to differences between IGCSE Core and Extended. In this way, teachers are in control to decide what the most appropriate level is for every student.

The IGCSE Core curriculum

The IGCSE Core curriculum is targeted at students expected to score grades C to G. It covers a full layout of the subject and it is within the ability of the majority of students.

The IGCSE Extended curriculum

Is it commonly known that the Extended curriculum opens up the opportunity into higher education for some students or professional training for other students or professionals. The Extended curriculum is comprised of the Core curriculum and the Supplement. Unlike the Core curriculum which targets grades C to G, the Extended curriculum is targeted for students who expect grades A* to E. The Supplement includes more depth and more topics on top of the Core curriculum.

Grades Available

The grades available for the Core curriculum are C D E F G, whereas, for the Extended Curriculum, grades available are  A* A B C D E.There is an overlap of three grades (C, D, and E) due to accommodating students who had a higher or lower grade than the estimated grades by their teachers.

IGCSE Grades

The full range of grades is available for some subjects. In this case, it is only one IGCSE curriculum and paper covering the complete ability range. If students enter the IGCSE Core curriculum, they will be capped to C the highest grade for this curriculum.
